The air in the abandoned warehouse was thick with the scent of dust and decay, a fitting perfume for the confession Alex was about to deliver. Moonlight, fractured by grimy panes of glass, painted stripes across the concrete floor, illuminating the tense tableau. Jaya lay still, a silent testament to the venom that had dripped from Alex’s lips, a venom I was only now beginning to truly taste. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage, each beat a desperate plea for the reality to shatter, for this to be another one of Alex’s elaborate games. But the stillness beside me, the chilling absence of Jaya’s usual vibrant energy, screamed a truth far more terrifying than any fiction.

“You see, Lilly,” Alex’s voice, usually a velvet caress, now held a chilling, almost gleeful edge, “this isn’t about love. Not for me, at least.” He took a step closer, his eyes, those captivating pools I’d fallen into so willingly, now glinted with an unnerving light. “Love is a weakness. A distraction. What I crave is… legacy.”

My breath hitched. Legacy? What was he talking about? He ran a hand through his dark hair, a gesture so familiar, so tender, it felt like a physical blow. “All these little lives,” he gestured vaguely towards the shadowed corners of the warehouse, “they’re just stepping stones. Building blocks for something grander.”
