The dusty attic air hung thick and still, a forgotten breath held captive for years. Sunlight, fractured by a grimy windowpane, painted shifting patterns on the wooden floorboards, illuminating motes of dust dancing in their silent ballet. This was where secrets slept, where forgotten treasures waited to be rediscovered, and where, for the Narrator, a quiet ache resided. She traced the outline of a child’s handprint, still vibrant against the aged wood of a trunk, a testament to a moment long past. It was Melodee’s, she was sure of it, a perfect, tiny imprint that felt like a whisper from a ghost.

“Do you remember this?” she murmured, her voice barely disturbing the quiet. The handprint offered no answer, only the silent echo of a laughter that once filled these spaces. A pang, sharp and familiar, twisted in her chest. It had been so long since she’d heard that laughter, so long since she’d seen the bright spark in those eyes. A dream, vivid and fleeting, had visited her just last night. Melodee, bathed in sunlight, her hair a cascade of gold, was laughing. Then, the harsh reality of waking in a cold, grey room had descended, another dawn to face alone.

She’d spent so many years fighting the demons that whispered insidious lies, drowning their venomous words in a sea of tears. They told her she was a failure, that she’d wasted precious years. And now, they spoke of a new home waiting for her little porcelain doll. What was a grandma supposed to do when her world felt this empty? The ache of missing them, of missing *them*, was a constant, dull throb.
