For the narrator, this friendship was that hiding place, a sanctuary found amidst the chaos. She remembered the days when CPS, like a persistent shadow, would knock on doors, their presence a cold reminder of the stories whispered, the secrets bravely told. They had watched children suffer, a pain that gnawed at their insides, a wound they couldn't mend. Yet, in those moments, when the world felt like it was closing in, their spirits, against all odds, refused to bend.

"Remember that time the power went out at Mrs. Gable's?" the narrator asked, her voice soft, almost a whisper, as if afraid to break the fragile peace of the present. The radio played a gentle tune, a stark contrast to the storms they had navigated.

Her friend, Maya, chuckled, the sound like the tinkling of wind chimes. "Oh, I remember! We were trying to assemble that ridiculously complicated toy for little Leo, and then BAM! Darkness. We had to use our phone flashlights and your little emergency candles."
