The air in the abandoned amusement park tasted of rust and cotton candy, a cloying sweetness that clung to the back of Evan’s throat. Twisted metal structures, once joyous rides, now resembled skeletal remains against a bruised twilight sky. This was one of the ‘pockets,’ Mara had called them, places where the Playwright’s suffocating grip seemed to loosen, where the performance, for a breath, forgot its lines. Here, the usual suffocating order gave way to a wild, untamed energy, a flicker of something primal that felt unnervingly familiar.

A carousel, its painted horses frozen mid-gallop, groaned a discordant melody. A lone figure, a child no older than seven, sat on a chipped unicorn, her eyes wide and vacant as she rocked back and forth, a silent, repetitive motion. Evan’s skin prickled. This wasn't the usual forced tableau. This was… something else.

“It feels different here,” Mara whispered, her hand finding Evan’s, her grip tight. Her gaze swept across the desolate landscape, her uncanny ability to see the ‘seams’ of reality evident in the subtle tremor of her fingers. “Less… structured. More like a forgotten attic, full of old toys and dust.”
