Chapter 8

The Maze of Memory

They enter a desolate, shifting landscape that seems to be constructed from Evan's own fractured memories. Each step is a perilous gamble, the ground dissolving beneath them, the air thick with the threat of further erasure. Familiar places twist into nightmarish parodies of his lost past. Mara, her own memories of Evan her unwavering compass, guides him through this treacherous internal terrain, her recollections of his smile, his touch, his very essence, the only solid ground in this sea of forgetting.

The air thickened, not with the usual dust of forgotten theaters, but with something far more insidious—the scent of decay, of things unremembered. Evan felt it coalesce around him, a creeping fog that wasn’t cold, but hollow. He looked down at his hands, half-expecting to see the familiar black geometries pulsing, a constant reminder of the price of his power. Nearby, a row of identical houses, their windows dark and vacant, stood in unsettling symmetry. They looked like childhood homes, like places he’d only glimpsed in faded photographs, but twisted, warped, as if viewed through a broken mirror.
