Chapter 14
The Unraveling Thread
Evan's very essence begins to fray, his form flickering like a dying flame. Mara watches in horror as he seems to become less substantial, his presence thinning with each passing moment. The Playwright interprets this as the inevitable consequence of imperfection, a sign that free will and flawed existence are unsustainable. It intensifies its efforts to impose its perfect, sterile order, believing it is saving humanity from itself.
The air thrummed with a dissonant hum, a low vibration that seemed to emanate from the very marrow of existence. “Evan?” Mara’s voice, a lifeline in the rising tide of unease, cut through the thrum. She was a solid presence, her hand firm on his arm, her eyes, wide and dark, fixed on him with an intensity that both anchored and terrified him. She was the only one who seemed to see it, the subtle, terrifying unraveling.
He tried to smile, a gesture that felt brittle, like cracking porcelain. “Just… a little tired, Mara.”
