Chapter 8
The Crack's Cold Grip
New poisons offered, a different kind of haze. Crack cocaine's allure, in these desperate days. Nine years surrendered, a cycle of despair. Lost in the shadows, beyond all repair.
The air in Greenchase had a different kind of chill, not the biting wind that scraped against bone, but a heavy, suffocating blanket woven from desperation and the acrid tang of something new. It was the scent of a different kind of surrender, a surrender that felt less like defeat and more like a perverse kind of homecoming. My sister, a phantom in the periphery of my life, had a knack for introducing me to the devil in disguise, and this time, he came wrapped in a paper thin bag, smelling of chemicals and promises whispered in the dark.
Crack. The word itself was a harsh, guttural sound, a stark contrast to the soft, yielding smoke of meth. He was there, of course. The man who’d promised me the moon and delivered me to hell. He saw the flicker of curiosity in my eyes, the spark of recklessness that he’d so carefully fanned into a wildfire. He knew my weaknesses, my vulnerabilities, the hollow spaces inside me that craved to be filled, no matter the cost. He offered me a different kind of escape, a shared descent into a pit so deep, the light of the world couldn’t reach us.
