The air in the shrine had been thick, not just with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, but with a palpable dread that clung to Ada’s skin like a shroud. Malice, a creature woven from the deepest shadows and the most bitter resentments, loomed before her, its form shifting, its glowing eyes fixed on her with a predatory hunger. Every whispered accusation, every festering grudge that had ever festered in Umuaku, seemed to have coalesced into this terrifying entity. Ada could feel the weight of it, the ancient malice that had been slowly, insidiously, feeding on the village’s discord.

"You cannot stop me," Malice had hissed, its voice a dry rustle of dead leaves, a chilling echo of every unspoken betrayal. Ada felt a tremor run through her, a primal urge to flee, to turn and race back into the relative safety of the moonlit forest. But then, like a cool balm on a burning wound, her grandmother’s words returned to her: *Darkness survives where people allow it to live.*

Allow it to live. Yes. Malice thrived on their fear, on their anger, on the divisions that had sprung up like poisonous weeds in the heart of Umuaku. Her father’s death, the lingering sadness that still sometimes shadowed her own heart, had taught her about grief, but her grandmother had taught her about something far more potent: the power of choosing light.
