Chapter 12
A Choice of Courage
Instead of succumbing to fear, Ada stands her ground. She confronts Malice, asserting that its power stems from the villagers' willingness to harbor negativity and hatred.
The air in the shrine, once thick with the chill of encroaching dread, now vibrated with a different kind of energy. Ada stood her ground, the rough, cool surface of the sacred bell a grounding force in her trembling hand. Before her, the shadow of Malice writhed, its form coalescing from the encroaching darkness like ink spilled into water. The glow in its eyes, which had held such a chilling, predatory gleam moments before, now flickered with a nascent fury. Ada’s voice, though it threatened to crack, held a steady resonance, an echo of her grandmother’s wisdom that had bloomed in her mind with the sudden clarity of a lightning strike. "You have power because we give it power," she declared, her gaze unwavering.
Malice recoiled, a sound like dry leaves skittering across stone escaping its shadowy form. It was not accustomed to defiance. Ada’s words struck at the very foundation of its existence, a truth so simple yet so profound that it was almost always overlooked.
"We?" the shadow hissed, the single word laden with a sneer that promised torment. "You speak of 'we' as if you are separate from them. You are Umuaku. You are born of their pettiness, their spite. You carry their grudges like stones in your own gut." It extended a long, spindly limb, its form rippling like heat haze. "Your father's death… did you not blame? Did you not harbor a sliver of resentment for the unfairness of it all? Did you not, in your darkest moments, wish it had been someone else?"
