The air in our small apartment had always hummed with a comfortable warmth, a quiet rhythm of everyday life. Mom, with her sharp wit and even sharper nails, would be poring over scrolls, muttering about cursed techniques under her breath. Dad, ever the picture of gentle strength, would be tinkering with some arcane device, a faint glow emanating from his hands. I, David, fourteen and blissfully unaware of anything beyond homework and video games, was content in our little bubble. Then, everything shattered. The revelation that my parents, Yuji and Nobara, were not just ordinary people, but sorcerers, was the first tremor. The second, and far more earth-shattering, was realizing that my own power, the raw, untamed force that had always simmered beneath my skin, was something else entirely. Something… immense.

Now, a new kind of chill had begun to creep into our lives, a subtle but persistent unease that had nothing to do with the weather. It started with hushed whispers, almost imperceptible at first, like the rustling of dry leaves in a forgotten corner of the world. Then came the shadows. They weren’t the comforting kind that stretched long in the afternoon sun, but predatory, clinging to alleyways, lurking in the periphery of my vision. My parents, their usual calm replaced by a steely vigilance, began to speak in coded phrases, their eyes constantly scanning our surroundings.

"David," Mom said one evening, her voice tight, "we need to be more careful. There are eyes watching."
