The air in the hidden chamber crackled with a tension so thick it felt like static electricity prickling my skin. Outside, the wind howled, a mournful song that mirrored the unease churning in my gut. We were in some kind of ancient sanctuary, deep beneath the earth, a place Yuji had found with a flick of his wrist and a whispered incantation that still made my head spin. Nobara, ever practical, was tending to a small, sputtering fire, her brow furrowed with worry. Yuji, his calm presence a steady anchor in the storm, sat beside me, his hand resting on my shoulder.

"They're close," he said, his voice a low rumble. "I can feel it."

My heart hammered against my ribs. The 'they' were the shadowy organization, the hunters who had shattered our quiet life. They were the reason we were here, huddled in the dark, on the run. I still couldn't quite wrap my head around it. One moment, I was just David, fourteen, more concerned with acing my math test and figuring out what Kiki meant by "literary genius," the next I was a target, a weapon, a… sorcerer? The word still felt foreign, like a borrowed coat that didn't quite fit.
