Chapter 7
A Bridge of Play
Carlos, intrigued, tentatively throws Roca's ball. Roca responds with enthusiasm. Mateo encourages the interaction, marking a small but significant shift in Carlos's perception and the village's view.
The afternoon sun, a benevolent eye in the vast blue, cast long, lazy shadows across the dusty village square. Mateo, his heart a familiar blend of hope and quiet apprehension, watched as Roca, his loyal companion, nudged a well-worn, tough leather glove with his nose. The glove, a gift from a traveling merchant, was more than just a training tool; it was a symbol of their shared journey, a testament to Mateo’s unwavering belief in his dog. He’d spent hours with Roca in their small yard, the rhythmic thud of the glove against his arm a soothing counterpoint to the anxious whispers that often followed them.
Roca, a creature of pure, unadulterated energy, panted softly, his tail giving a tentative thump-thump against the packed earth. Mateo knelt, his movements slow and deliberate, offering a reassuring scratch behind Roca’s ears. “Good boy, Roca. You’re doing so well,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble of affection. He always made sure Roca had fresh water and a hearty meal, simple acts of care that spoke volumes in their silent language. And play, oh, the play! It was the cornerstone of their bond, the vibrant thread that wove through the fabric of their days.

A small knot of village youths, their faces etched with the familiar curiosity and a healthy dose of mischief, had gathered at the edge of the square, their usual boisterous chatter subdued to a curious murmur. Among them, his eyes wide and fixed on Roca’s joyous leaps, was Carlos. Carlos, whose quick wit and even quicker feet had often been employed in teasing Mateo and, by extension, his Pitbull.
