Chapter 6
Seeds of Doubt
Doña Elena reflects on her past trauma with her injured dog. She observes Mateo's gentle training and Roca's playful interactions, a flicker of doubt about her assumptions beginning to form.
Doña Elena sat by her window, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the worn wooden floor of her small cottage. The air, usually thick with the scent of drying herbs and woodsmoke, seemed to carry a different kind of weight today, a subtle hum of unease that mirrored the one in her own heart. Her gnarled fingers, accustomed to the delicate work of mending nets and weaving baskets, were still. They rested on her lap, a stark contrast to the restless energy that usually permeated her days.
She was watching Mateo. He was in his small, dusty yard, the same yard where she’d first seen the creature he called Roca. The dog, a powerful silhouette against the bright sky, was a bundle of coiled energy, his muscles rippling even when he was still. Mateo, as always, was a study in quiet dedication. He wasn’t shouting, he wasn’t forcing. He was speaking in that low, gentle tone that always surprised her, a tone so at odds with the brute strength she perceived in the animal.
The memory, sharp and unwelcome, pricked at her. It had been years ago, before Mateo and his strange dog had even arrived in their quiet village. Her own beloved companion, a scruffy terrier named Pip, had been playing near the edge of the village when a rabid stray, gaunt and wild-eyed, had attacked him. The yelps, the blood, the helplessness – it was all etched into her memory with the clarity of a fresh wound. Pip had survived, barely, but the fear had taken root, a deep, unshakeable conviction that certain breeds, breeds with teeth and a powerful build, were inherently dangerous. And Roca, with his broad head and solid frame, fit that terrifying image perfectly.
