The morning air in the village was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke. Mateo, with Roca trotting faithfully beside him, set out for their daily walk. The usual route took them along the dusty path that skirted the edge of the village, a path that offered a little more space for Roca to stretch his legs and for Mateo to practice his gentle commands. He had brought along Roca's favorite sturdy glove, a well-worn piece of leather that had seen its share of playful tugs, and a bright red ball, a beacon of joy in Roca's world. Mateo always made sure Roca had fresh water and food back home, but out here, it was about building their connection, about letting Roca simply *be* a dog, a good dog, under the vast, indifferent sky.

Mateo was still new to this village, and his presence, much like Roca’s, was a subject of quiet observation. He was a gentle soul, patient and observant, with a shyness that often kept him on the periphery of village life. But his love for animals, a love as deep and constant as the river that flowed nearby, was undeniable. He saw past the broad chest and powerful jaws of his Pitbull, seeing instead the eager intelligence in Roca’s dark eyes, the hopeful wag of his tail. To those who didn't know them, Roca might have appeared intimidating, a creature of raw power. But Mateo knew better. He knew the soft rumble of Roca's contented sigh, the way his ears would prick up at the faintest sound, the sheer delight that exploded from him when a game of fetch began.

As they rounded a bend, the familiar sight of the village square came into view. Children, their laughter echoing like scattered chimes, played near the central well. Mateo felt a familiar tightening in his chest, a subtle tension that always accompanied their excursions into public spaces. He kept Roca on a short, firm leash, his voice a low, reassuring murmur, "Easy, boy. Just a walk." Roca, usually so attuned to Mateo's moods, seemed a little more keyed up today, his senses on high alert. The air was alive with the usual village sounds – the clatter of a blacksmith’s hammer, the distant bleating of sheep, the low hum of conversation.
