The sky had been a placid blue all morning, a gentle canvas against the rolling hills that cradled their small village. Mateo had taken Roca out for his usual constitutional, the dog trotting happily beside him, leash held loosely in Mateo’s hand. He’d brought along a sturdy, well-loved tug toy, the kind designed to withstand the enthusiastic jaws of a strong dog. Roca, ever eager, had nudged it with his nose, his tail giving a hopeful thump against Mateo’s leg. Mateo smiled, the familiar warmth spreading through him. Mateo’s own stomach tightened. He knew this sound. He knew what it preceded.
