The encrypted message arrived like a ghost, a flicker in the dark corners of my inbox that shouldn't exist. It bypassed the usual filters, a phantom limb of data reaching out from the abyss. *Evelyn.* The sender ID was a single initial, a ghost of her name, but the encrypted signature was undeniably hers. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drummer in the sudden silence of my apartment. I’d been holed up for days, the city outside a blur of lights and sirens that seemed to be closing in. Every shadow felt like Agent Sterling, every passing car a potential trap.

I pulled up the decryption key, my fingers trembling. The words that bloomed on the screen were stark, devoid of the usual scientific jargon, replaced by a raw, desperate confession. "Alex," it began, "I can't sleep. Not anymore. The weight of it… it’s crushing me. You were right. All of it. Worse, even."

My breath hitched. Worse. The word hung in the air, heavy with unspoken horrors. I leaned closer, devouring her words. She wrote of the early days of the G.A.T.E. Program, not as a tool for progress, as it had been sold, but as something far more insidious. "We weren't building a bridge to the future, Alex. We were building a cage. A meticulously crafted illusion."
