The knock on my door was sharp, insistent. Not a friendly rap, but a demand. I froze, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Agent Sterling. I’d seen his face in the grainy security footage I’d managed to pull, a ghost in the machine, a shadow of an operative. He was the tangible threat, the face of the Architects’ wrath.
