The hunter’s moon had receded, leaving behind a sky that felt… ordinary. A pale, washed-out blue that lacked the dramatic crimson glow that had mirrored the blood spilled across the wilderness. It had been three days since we’d hauled the Hunter’s Moon Killer, a man named Silas Thorne, from the damp earth of his meticulously prepared final hunting ground. Three days since the adrenaline had finally drained from my veins, leaving behind an ache that settled deep in my bones.

I sat at my desk, the familiar clutter of case files and cold coffee cups a comforting, if slightly depressing, tableau. Jack was across from me, his usual restless energy subdued, his gaze fixed on some point beyond the grimy precinct window. He was sketching in his notepad, not the quick, frantic lines of a suspect composite, but something more thoughtful, more… detailed. I’d seen him do it before, when he was deep in thought, losing himself in the lines and shadows.

“You want another refill, kid?” I asked, gesturing to the lukewarm sludge in the pot. It was a peace offering, of sorts. A way to break the silence that had become less of an awkward void and more of a shared space.
