The metallic tang of the ambulance siren was a fading echo, replaced by the rustle of leaves and the distant hoot of an owl. The air, thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, still clung to the phantom odor of blood. We stood in the clearing, the harsh glare of our flashlights cutting through the deep indigo of the night. The Hunter’s Moon, a bloated, spectral orb, cast long, distorted shadows that danced like wraiths around the scene. It had been a brutal ballet, this final act, orchestrated by a killer who knew the woods as well as he knew hate.

The man, a local trapper named Silas Croft, lay sprawled near his own snares, his life extinguished with the same efficiency he’d used to end others. His eyes, wide and unseeing, stared up at the indifferent moon, a silent testament to the fury that had consumed him. The killer, a figure we’d chased through dense undergrowth and whispered rumors, was finally caught. Not by a clever trap, not by a moment of brilliance, but by sheer, unadulterated desperation.

Jack, his face streaked with dirt and sweat, knelt beside Croft, his movements surprisingly gentle. The brute force he often employed was absent, replaced by a quiet reverence. He’d seen too much, too fast, this kid. I watched him, a knot of something I didn’t want to name tightening in my chest. It wasn’t pity, not exactly. It was… an acknowledgment.
