The air in the woods still hummed with the aftermath of our chase, thick with the scent of pine needles and something metallic, something that spoke of finality. The killer, a man named Silas Thorne, lay prone, his breath ragged against the damp earth, a grotesque parody of a downed stag. His eyes, once burning with a zealous fury, now held a dull, defeated glaze. He was no mythical beast, no phantom of the woods, but a man, broken and warped by his own private war.

“He’s all yours, Thorne,” I grunted, nudging him with the toe of my boot. Not out of malice, but out of a weary satisfaction that the hunt, at least this one, was finally over.

Jack stood a few feet away, his chest heaving, the usual restless energy in him subdued for once. He looked… different. The raw edges of the rookie had been sanded down by the relentless grind of this case. He’d seen things he couldn’t unsee, pushed himself to limits he hadn’t known existed. And he’d done it all with me breathing down his neck, a constant, irritating reminder of his inexperience.
