The air in the Eternal City was thick with a scent Archius couldn't quite place – a metallic tang mixed with something earthy and primal, like blood and damp soil. It permeated the stone walls of his cell, a constant, unsettling reminder of where he was. He’d spent days, or perhaps weeks, in that hole, the passage of time marked only by the meager rations of bland gruel and the distant, echoing clang of metal. His Roman discipline, honed in the unforgiving camps of Germania and the sun-baked plains of Parthia, was his only bulwark against despair. Yet, even the sternest Roman stoicism could begin to fray when faced with the unknown.

Then, the door to his cell had grated open, not with the usual clank of a guard's boot, but with a softer, more hesitant sound. A sliver of torchlight cut through the gloom, illuminating a figure cloaked and hooded, their face obscured. Archius tensed, his muscles coiling, ready for another interrogation, another futile attempt to break his will. But the figure simply gestured, a silent invitation. Hesitation warred with a desperate hope. This was his chance.

He followed the shadow through a labyrinth of passages, each turn a gamble, each creak of stone a potential alarm. The silence was more unnerving than the usual din of a city; it felt like a held breath, a city waiting. His guide, who introduced herself in hushed tones as Lyra, moved with a practiced stealth that spoke of deep familiarity with these hidden ways. She spoke of the Emperor, Valerius, with a venom that Archius, a soldier who understood the weight of command and the cost of tyranny, could instantly recognize. He listened, his mind absorbing the fragments of information, filing away the names of creatures and the whispers of rebellion.
