The air in the lower passages of the Eternal City tasted of damp earth and something metallic, a scent that clung to Archius’s tongue like old fear. Lyra moved with a practiced silence, her small frame a shadow against the rough-hewn stone, her hand a steady presence on his arm, guiding him through the labyrinthine darkness. He’d traded the chilling damp of his cell for this oppressive closeness, the weight of the unknown pressing in with every shuffling step.

“Careful,” Lyra’s voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the oppressive quiet. “The patrols here are more frequent. The Emperor fears what stirs beneath his gilded streets.”

Archius grunted, his eyes straining to pierce the gloom. Each twist and turn of the tunnel brought a fresh wave of disorientation. The stone beneath his boots was uneven, slick with moisture that reflected the faint, bioluminescent glow emanating from strange fungi clinging to the walls. This wasn’t the orderly, disciplined march of Roman legions. This was a descent into a world that defied every law of nature he’d ever known.
