The air in the lower levels of the Eternal City was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and vaguely metallic, like old blood mixed with forgotten ink. Lyra’s hand, surprisingly steady, had guided Archius through a labyrinth of service tunnels and disused conduits, each turn plunging them deeper into the city’s underbelly. The flickering light of the bioluminescent moss clinging to the walls cast long, dancing shadows that played tricks on Archius’s eyes, making him see the glint of metal or the flicker of movement where there was only stone. His Roman discipline, honed over years of marching through dust and blood, warred with the primal unease that clawed at his gut. This place felt wrong, profoundly so, like a tomb where the dead refused to rest.

“We’re close,” Lyra whispered, her voice a low murmur that barely disturbed the oppressive silence. She paused, pressing her ear against a section of wall that seemed no different from any other. A moment later, she gave a small nod. “This is it.”

With a grunt, she pushed against a seemingly solid stone slab. It didn’t budge. Archius stepped forward, his soldier’s instinct kicking in. He scanned the area, his gaze sharp, searching for any seam, any imperfection. His fingers traced the cool, rough surface of the stone, feeling for a hidden mechanism, a pressure plate, anything.
