The chill of the stone seeped through Archius’s worn tunic, a constant reminder of his captivity. He traced the rough surface with a calloused finger, the dampness clinging to him like a shroud. Days blurred into an indistinguishable cycle of darkness and the echoing clang of distant machinery. He’d seen wonders in his time, from the sun-drenched forums of Rome to the windswept plains of Germania, but the Eternal City was a place apart. It pulsed with a life that was both alien and unnerving, a city built on secrets and sustained by power he couldn’t comprehend.

Lyra’s arrival had been a flicker of hope in the oppressive gloom. Her movements were fluid, her presence a stark contrast to the brutish guards who occasionally tossed him scraps of food. She spoke little, her eyes, dark and intelligent, conveying more than any words could. But today, something had shifted. The usual wariness in her gaze had been replaced by a fierce, burning anger.

She knelt beside him, her hands busy with the intricate mechanism of his cell door. The air thrummed with a low, resonant hum, a sound Archius had come to associate with the city’s inner workings. “They think they control everything,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying a weight that made the stones seem to vibrate. “They think their machines and their beasts are enough to crush any dissent.”
