Chapter 9
Marketplace of Wonders
Disguised, they navigate a bustling marketplace. Exotic goods and strange technologies are on display. Archius feels the eyes of the city on him, a constant threat.
The air in the marketplace was a thick, cloying stew of scents Archius couldn't quite decipher. It was nothing like the familiar, earthy aroma of the Roman forums, or even the acrid tang of a battlefield. Here, sweet, heady perfumes mingled with the sharp, metallic odor of some unknown craft, and the musky, primal scent of creatures he’d only glimpsed from the periphery of his escape. Lyra, her face obscured by a cowl that seemed to absorb the light, moved with a practiced ease that grated on his nerves. He, on the other hand, felt like a bull in a china shop, his heavy, borrowed tunic an ill-fitting disguise that did little to quell the gnawing unease in his gut.
They had traded his Roman armor for these drab garments in a shadowed alcove, a transaction overseen by a wiry man with eyes that darted like trapped birds. The exchange had been silent, efficient, and underscored by Lyra’s terse instructions: "Blend in. Speak little. Observe everything." Archius, a man accustomed to commanding legions and barking orders, found the enforced passivity a peculiar torture. Every rustle of fabric, every shouted word in this alien tongue, sent a jolt of adrenaline through him. He felt the city’s gaze, a pervasive hum of awareness that prickled his skin. It wasn't the open hostility of the guards who had dragged him to the dungeons; this was something subtler, a constant, unspoken assessment.
Stalls overflowed with wares that defied comprehension. Gleaming metal spheres pulsed with an inner light, their surfaces etched with intricate patterns that seemed to shift and reform. Bolts of fabric shimmered with iridescent hues, woven from threads that gleamed like spun moonlight. There were fruits, impossibly vibrant, their shapes and colors unlike anything Archius had ever seen, piled high on woven mats. And the creatures. Oh, the creatures.
