The emergency lights of Akutumumtos High still flickered, a phantom pulse against the sterile white of the gymnasium walls. It had been days since the screaming had finally ceased, since the final, chilling silence had descended, but the echoes refused to dissipate. Hana stood by the trophy case, the polished glass reflecting her own gaunt face, a face etched with a weariness that went deeper than mere lack of sleep. Around her, the usual boisterous symphony of high school life was muted, a hesitant murmur. Students shuffled through the hallways with downcast eyes, their laughter brittle, their conversations hushed, as if afraid to disturb the fragile peace. The air itself felt heavy, thick with unspoken fears and the lingering scent of disinfectant, a poor mask for the metallic tang of something far more primal that had saturated these halls.

Akase’s locker, once a vibrant canvas of friendship bracelets and faded concert tickets, was now starkly bare. Hana traced the cool metal, her fingertips finding the faint scratch marks that marked their shared secrets, their inside jokes, their whispered dreams. Akase was gone. Kenji was gone. And yet, the emptiness they left behind felt more substantial than any presence. The victory, if it could even be called that, tasted like ash. She had done what she set out to do. She had uncovered the truth. She had played a dangerous game and, against all odds, she had survived. But survival felt less like triumph and more like a prolonged, agonizing aftermath.
