The air in the gymnasium hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from dust motes dancing in the weak afternoon sun and the metallic tang of fear. Hana stood frozen, her breath catching in her throat like a trapped bird. In her hand, clutched so tightly her knuckles were white, was the locket. Akase’s locket. The one Kenji had so carelessly discarded when Hana had lunged, the one that had fallen with a soft clink onto the polished wood floor, revealing the tiny, faded photograph of Akase and a younger, softer-faced boy within. She remembered the feel of Kenji’s surprisingly strong grip, the desperate scramble for purchase on the slick linoleum, the sickening thud as Kenji had slammed against a locker.

"You shouldn't have looked so hard, Hana," Kenji’s voice was a low, silken whisper, devoid of any warmth. It was the voice of a predator assessing its cornered prey. "Some things are better left buried."
