Sharin watched from the dusty windowpane, the late afternoon sun casting long, distorted shadows across the cobbled street. Her heart, a heavy stone in her chest, ached with a familiar, bitter ache. Down below, a small figure huddled against the worn brick wall of the market square, his head bowed, a collection of tin cups and worn handkerchiefs spread before him. Hectorn.

It had been years, so many years, since she’d last seen him like this. Not since she was a girl, barely older than he was now, and her father had first decreed her responsibility. Back then, it had been a game, a chore, something she resented but could still push through with a sigh and a muttered complaint under her breath. But this… this was different. His thin shoulders were hunched, a posture that spoke volumes of a spirit worn down, of a will that had long since been broken. He didn't call out, didn't even lift his head as people hurried past, their footsteps echoing the indifference of the world. They saw a beggar, a sad, pathetic sight, but they didn’t see Hectorn, her Hectorn, the boy who used to chase fireflies with her until the stars came out, the boy who would hide behind her skirts when a stray dog barked too loudly.
