The world outside the familiar walls of their small home felt vast and unforgiving. Hectorn, adrift without Sharin’s steady hand, found himself utterly lost. The morning had begun with a churning in his stomach, a familiar anxiety that usually dissipated the moment Sharin’s calm voice or gentle nudge reminded him of the day’s tasks. But today, Sharin was gone. Not just to the market or a neighbor's house, but truly *gone*. The finality of her departure, the click of the latch on the door echoing in the sudden, cavernous silence, had sent a tremor through him.

He stood in the middle of the main room, his eyes darting around as if expecting her to materialize from the shadows. The worn rug beneath his feet seemed to swallow his tentative steps. He needed breakfast, but the thought of navigating the kitchen alone was a daunting mountain. He always waited for Sharin to prepare it, to slice the bread just so, to pour the milk without spilling. He’d call her “Shar-bear” when he wanted an extra piece of fruit, a nickname that used to make her sigh but now felt like a distant memory. Today, he couldn't even muster the energy to find the bread.

A small whimper escaped his lips. He missed her. He missed the way she’d patiently untangle his shoelaces, the way she’d remind him to say “please” and “thank you,” even though he rarely felt the need to. He’d always been content to let Sharin handle the world for him. It was easier. It was safe. Now, safety felt like a forgotten dream.
