Chapter 10
A New Path
Sharin makes a difficult choice to step away, seeking her own life. This decision, though painful, is a necessary step towards her own independence and a chance for Hectorn to face his own reality.
The worn wooden floorboards creaked a familiar tune beneath Sharin’s bare feet as she tiptoed through the quiet house. Dawn was still a whisper on the horizon, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and grey. Hectorn, bless his eternally dependent heart, was still a lump under his blankets, his soft snores a gentle rhythm in the stillness. Sharin paused by his bedside, a pang of something akin to tenderness, quickly followed by a tidal wave of exhaustion, washing over her. He looked so small, so utterly incapable, and it was a sight that had become the defining landscape of her young life.
Twelve years. Twelve years of being the older one, the responsible one, the one whose own nascent dreams were perpetually shelved in favour of Hectorn’s endless needs. Her father’s voice, a deep rumble that had always held the weight of absolute command, echoed in her mind: "You are the elder, Sharin. It is your duty." Duty. The word had become a heavy cloak, woven from threads of resentment and a desperate longing for air. She remembered being eleven, the same age Hectorn was now, feeling the weight of his small hand in hers, the endless parade of "Sharin, I'm hungry," "Sharin, I'm scared," "Sharin, I don't know how." She’d pleaded then, "He’s not a baby, Papa! Let him try!" But her father had just shaken his head, his gaze unyielding. "You are older." And so it had continued, a relentless cycle of her doing for him, of him leaning on her, until the very idea of him standing on his own two feet seemed like a fantastical tale from a faraway land.
Her own eleven-year-old self, the one who had yearned for scraped knees and daring adventures, had long since faded into the background, a ghost of a girl whose laughter had been muted by the constant hum of responsibility. Now, at twelve, Sharin felt a different kind of fire stirring within her, a quiet fury that had been simmering for years. It was a fire that whispered of a life unburdened, a life where her own hands could reach for her own sky.
