Chapter 9
An Unlikely Friendship
Maya decides to stop chasing and instead offers Pip a friendly gesture. The mischievous scarab, sensing her warmth, cautiously approaches, marking the beginning of their bond.
The frantic scurry of tiny legs across her linen wrappings had finally ceased. Maya, the playful mummy, lay still, her bandaged arms resting at her sides, her ancient heart – or what passed for it – thrumming with a mixture of relief and lingering irritation. The itch, that persistent, maddening tickle that had jolted her from an eon of slumber, was gone. Pip, the minuscule, iridescent scarab beetle, had finally, blessedly, retreated. She’d chased him through the dusty corridors, under towering statues, and across the vast, sun-baked courtyards of the pharaoh’s tomb. He’d darted and danced, a living jewel against the muted sands and faded hieroglyphs, a whirlwind of playful mischief that had, frankly, exhausted her.
She took a slow, deliberate breath, the dry air tasting of millennia past. Her sarcophagus, once a comforting embrace of carved cedar and gold leaf, now felt like a slightly too-small bed after a particularly vigorous game of hide-and-seek. She flexed her stiff fingers, the bandages rustling like dry leaves. The chase had been… exhilarating, in a way she hadn't anticipated. Annoying, yes, but also, strangely, invigorating. It had been so long since anything had stirred her from her quiet repose, so long since she’d felt the thrill of movement, the sharp intake of breath, the sheer, unadulterated joy of a challenge.
But the chase was over. Pip was gone. Or at least, he was somewhere else within the sprawling labyrinth of the tomb. Maya considered this. Should she return to her slumber? The thought was tempting. Another few thousand years of peaceful darkness sounded rather appealing. Yet, a strange, new feeling had begun to unfurl within her, a warmth that had nothing to do with the desert sun. It was a curiosity, a budding sense of… something akin to fondness.
