The Price of Immortality
Vladislaus reveals the true cost of his existence: the constant struggle against his predatory nature, the isolation, and the fear of inadvertently harming those he cherishes, especially Katja.
The air in my studio, usually alive with the scent of turpentine and drying oils, felt heavy, charged with an unspoken truth. Vladislaus, a creature of twilight and eternal night, stood before me, his gaze a tempest of untold ages. He had spoken of curses, of a destiny woven through centuries, but tonight, the veil thinned, and the raw, unvarnished reality of his existence began to bleed into the present.
"You see only the artistry," he began, his voice a low rumble that vibrated in the very marrow of my bones. "The masterpieces that bloom from your soul, guided by a touch you cannot comprehend. But you do not see the gnawing hunger, Katja. The beast that lies dormant, scratching at the edges of my consciousness, a constant, insidious whisper."
He turned away, his silhouette stark against the moonlight that streamed through the tall windows. The shadows in the room seemed to deepen, clinging to him like a second skin. I saw it then, not just in his words, but in the taut line of his shoulders, the almost imperceptible tremor in his hands. The struggle. It was a battle waged not on some grand battlefield, but within the confines of his own immortal being.
