The studio air, usually a comforting balm of turpentine and linseed oil, felt suddenly charged, thick with an unspoken tension that prickled Katja’s skin. She had been lost in the swirling vortex of a new canvas, her brush dancing with a phantom energy, when the scent reached her – not the familiar, earthy fragrance of Vladislaus, but something darker, sweeter, and altogether more dangerous. It was the perfume of night-blooming jasmine and something metallic, like blood on a winter wind.
She turned, her heart a frantic hummingbird in her chest, and found him standing at the threshold, a silhouette against the fading twilight. He was not Vladislaus. This man, this… intruder, possessed a beauty that was sharp, predatory, a honed edge that promised both exquisite pleasure and agonizing pain. His eyes, the color of aged amber, held a knowing glint, a flicker of amusement that did not reach the depths of his gaze. He moved with a fluid grace, each step a silent glide across the worn wooden floor, as if gravity itself bowed to his will.
“Katja,” he murmured, his voice a silken caress that sent shivers down her spine, not of delight, but of primal unease. It was a voice designed to charm, to beguile, but beneath the honeyed tones, Katja heard the rasp of a hungry predator. “Such a vibrant soul. A rare bloom in this mundane world.”
