A chill, not of the season, but of the soul, seeped into the marrow of my bones. It was a primal knowing, an instinct that prickled the nape of my neck and sent tremors through the delicate fibers of my being. The air in my studio, usually alive with the scent of turpentine and linseed oil, now felt thin, brittle, as if a breath could shatter it. My brushes lay still, the vibrant hues on my palette suddenly muted, mirroring the dimming of my own spirit. Unseen eyes. The phrase itself was a shard of ice, lodging itself in my chest. I felt them, a thousand tiny needles pricking at the edges of my perception, a cold, calculating gaze that sought not beauty, but blight.

My hands, usually so steady, trembled as I reached for a charcoal stick. The smooth, dark surface of the paper seemed to absorb the light, a reflection of the encroaching darkness I now sensed. It was a palpable presence, a weight pressing down, suffocating the very breath from my lungs. They were here. The hunters. The ones who stalked the night, their hearts hardened by a singular, burning purpose: to extinguish the flame of existence that flickered within Vladislaus.

I remembered his words, whispered like secrets on the wind, the sorrow etched in the lines around his ancient eyes. He had spoken of a world that recoiled from his kind, of a constant vigilance, a life lived in the perpetual shadow of their pursuit. And now, that shadow had stretched, long and skeletal, to encompass me.
