At a glance

  • On October 19, 2026, Literature & Latte’s download page offered Scrivener for macOS (3.5.2), Windows (3.1.6) and iOS only. There is no official Scrivener app for Android, and a US Google Play search for “Scrivener” returned no listing from Literature & Latte.
  • On iPhone and iPad, the official Scrivener app (Literature & Latte Ltd, US$23.99 on the US App Store) opens the same projects as the desktop versions and syncs them through Dropbox, not iCloud.
  • Android users can still edit parts of a draft: Scrivener for macOS or Windows can sync a project’s text to an external folder, such as a Dropbox folder, where an Android text editor can open the files. If you want a native Android app that plans and drafts a book with AI, AIBookCraft (“AI Book Writer Story Generator” on Google Play) is one option with a different workflow.

Is there a Scrivener app for Android?

No. Literature & Latte, the company that makes Scrivener, lists three versions on its official download page: macOS (Scrivener 3.5.2), Windows (Scrivener 3.1.6) and iOS. None is for Android, and on October 19, 2026 the page did not announce one. Requests for an Android version have run for years on the company’s user forum; that thread contains user discussion, not a release date.

A search for “Scrivener” on Google Play in the US on the same date returned general writing apps from other developers, such as word processors and novel-writing apps, but nothing published by Literature & Latte. If a listing ever claims to be Scrivener for Android, compare its developer name with the company named on literatureandlatte.com before paying.

Is there any Scrivener app on Google Play? The read-only .scriv project explorer

The closest thing on Google Play is “.scriv project explorer” by Penguinoid, a third-party developer that is not Literature & Latte. Its listing says it gives read-only access to Scrivener projects: you can browse a project’s folders and read synopses, notes and the text of individual sections, but you cannot edit them.

The project has to be copied onto the phone first, for example with a third-party sync app, and the listing was last updated on August 9, 2024. It is useful for reading a draft on an Android phone, not for writing in it.

What Scrivener on iPhone and iPad can do

The App Store listing describes the iOS app as the full project format in your pocket: a binder for organizing a manuscript into sections, a corkboard of index cards for rearranging scenes, imported research such as images and PDFs, word and character targets, a scriptwriting mode and compiling to formats including Word, PDF and plain text. On iPad it adds split-screen research and writing.

Syncing with the desktop versions runs through Dropbox, and the listing says it is not compatible with iCloud. On the check date the listed version was 1.2.4, released on 29 September 2023, so the iOS app has not had a feature update for some time. It is a one-time purchase on the App Store, separate from the desktop licences.

  1. Install Dropbox and sign in on both your computer and your iPhone or iPad.
  2. On the computer, save or move the Scrivener project into the Dropbox folder that Scrivener for iOS uses.
  3. In Scrivener on iOS, connect to Dropbox and sync to download the project.
  4. Sync again before closing the project on one device and opening it on the other, so both sides have the latest text.

How to edit a Scrivener draft on an Android phone

Because there is no Android app, Android users rely on a desktop feature instead. Scrivener for macOS and Windows can sync the text of a project with an external folder as plain text or rich text files. If that folder lives in a cloud drive such as Dropbox, any Android editor that can open files from that drive can edit them, and Scrivener picks up the changes the next time it syncs with the folder.

Scrivener users on the Literature & Latte forum describe exactly this setup for Android. It works for writing and revising scene text, but it is not Scrivener on the phone: the binder, corkboard, metadata and compile settings stay on the computer. Treat the phone as a place to draft or fix individual scenes.

  • Choose an Android editor that can browse into subfolders of your cloud drive and save .txt or .rtf files in place.
  • Edit one scene file at a time, and let it finish saving before you switch devices.
  • Keep a backup of the project before the first sync with an external folder.

Scrivener alternatives with a native Android app (checked October 19, 2026)

If the phone is where most of your writing happens, a tool built for it can matter more than any single feature. The Google Play facts below were read from each listing on October 19, 2026; none of these apps opens a .scriv project.

If you want AI help on Android: AIBookCraft

AIBookCraft is an AI-assisted book-writing product from SecondEarth AI, Inc. On Google Play it is listed as “AI Book Writer Story Generator” and on the App Store as “AI Book Writer Story Maker”; both are the AIBookCraft app. The mobile apps support developing an idea, outlining, drafting chapters, creating a cover, public sharing and PDF or DOCX export, with access depending on the plan and action.

The same account opens your books on the web, where a free account supports manual chapter writing and editing and Pro adds AI chapter drafting. It is not a mobile version of Scrivener and it does not import Scrivener projects; it suits writers who want an AI partner for structure and chapter drafts. Try it on one short scene before moving a manuscript.
