Best AI novel writing apps for iPhone and Android (2026)

Which popular AI writing tools actually have native iOS and Android apps, which are browser-only on a phone, and where AIBookCraft fits.

Sources checked:

At a glance

  • Official iOS and Android apps: Sudowrite (documented as a companion to its web app), ChatGPT, Claude and AIBookCraft. Novelcrafter and NovelAI are used through a mobile browser; NovelAI’s FAQ answers the phone-app question with mobile-browser and Progressive Web App access rather than a store app. Scrivener has iPhone and iPad apps but no Android version.
  • AIBookCraft’s iOS and Android apps cover ideas, outlines, chapters, covers, public sharing and PDF or DOCX export, and the same account opens your books on the web. On the App Store it is listed as “AI Book Writer Story Maker”; on Google Play it is listed as “AI Book Writer Story Generator.”
  • Prices checked October 9, 2026: AIBookCraft lets you write and edit your own chapters free, with Pro AI chapter drafting at US$5.99 a month on the web. Sudowrite starts at US$10 a month billed annually, Novelcrafter at US$4 a month (AI from US$8 with your own model key), and NovelAI at US$10 a month. ChatGPT and Claude have free plans.
  • App-store search shows similarly named apps from unrelated developers. Match the developer name against the official website before paying.
  • Store check on October 13, 2026: on the US App Store, AIBookCraft (4.7 from 350 ratings) and Sudowrite (4.4 from 388) were both updated in October 2026, while Scrivener for iOS was last updated in September 2023. Squibler still has no app of its own, and the US App Store apps named “Novel Crafter” come from other sellers, not from Novelcrafter.

Short answer: which AI writing tools have real phone apps?

If you want an AI novel writing app you can install on an iPhone or an Android phone, the official options among the most frequently recommended tools are Sudowrite, ChatGPT, Claude and AIBookCraft. Novelcrafter and NovelAI are web applications: you can open them in a phone browser, and NovelAI documents installing its site as a Progressive Web App, but neither lists an official native app on its own site. Scrivener is a manuscript organizer rather than an AI drafting tool; it sells an iOS and iPadOS app and has no Android version.

AIBookCraft is built for drafting a novel chapter by chapter on a phone: its official iOS and Android apps cover the idea, outline, chapters, cover and PDF or DOCX export, and the same account opens the manuscript on the web. Writing and editing your own chapters is free; AI chapter drafting that keeps story continuity is a Pro feature (US$5.99 a month or US$59.99 a year on the web). AIBookCraft is made by the publisher of this guide. If you mostly write at a desk and want deeper planning tools, Sudowrite (Story Bible and series continuity) and Novelcrafter (a Codex for characters, places and lore) go further there.

The table below records documented platform availability only. It does not rank prose quality, and a listed app does not mean every web feature is available on the phone. Sudowrite, for example, describes its app as a companion with a different feature set from the web version.

How do prices, free options and languages compare?

We read each official pricing page, help article or store listing on October 9, 2026. Prices are in US dollars before tax and can change; in-app prices in the App Store or Google Play can differ from web checkout. “Best for” is our editorial reading of the documented features, and where another tool is stronger than AIBookCraft, the row says so.

Store listings checked October 13, 2026: seller, rating and last update

A store page tells you three things a feature list does not: who actually publishes the app, how many people have rated it, and whether it is still being updated. We read the US App Store and US Google Play listings of the apps in this guide on October 13, 2026. Ratings move every day, so treat the numbers as a snapshot, and remember that a high rating on a general assistant such as ChatGPT says little about novel writing in particular.

Two things stand out. Scrivener's iPhone and iPad app was last updated on September 29, 2023 (version 1.2.4), so it is a stable manuscript organizer rather than an actively changing AI tool, and it is a paid app at US$23.99. Sudowrite's ratings differ by store: 4.4 on the App Store but 3.8 on Google Play, so Android writers should read recent Play reviews before subscribing. AIBookCraft was updated on both stores on October 10, 2026; its App Store seller is shown as Sunwoo Kim, the founder, and its Google Play developer as SecondEarth.

Native app, companion app or mobile browser: why the difference matters

A native app is installed from the App Store or Google Play and is built for a phone screen. A companion app is also native, but deliberately covers a subset of the full product, usually capture, dictation and light editing. A browser or Progressive Web App gives you the web product on a small screen; it can be perfectly usable for short sessions, but menus and side panels designed for a laptop may be harder to reach while the keyboard is open.

None of these is automatically better. If you draft at a desk and only want to capture ideas on the train, a companion app or a browser may be enough. If the phone is where most of your writing happens, check that the actions you repeat daily, such as finding the current chapter, editing a paragraph and generating the next scene, are available in the phone version you will actually use.

Sudowrite: official iOS and Android companion app

Sudowrite’s documentation answers the question directly: it has a mobile app on iOS and Android, intended as a companion to the web app. The app focuses on Smart Dictation and an enriched Chat experience; Write and Rewrite are available, and Story Bible can be read and edited. The documentation also lists what is not on mobile, including creating new Visualize images, the generative parts of Story Bible, creating Series folders and managing series timelines.

According to the same documentation, mobile access is included with a Sudowrite subscription, credits are shared between devices, and projects sync with the web. That makes it a strong fit if you already plan in Sudowrite on a computer. We cover the details in a separate article on the Sudowrite mobile app.

Novelcrafter and NovelAI: web apps you open on your phone

Novelcrafter presents itself as a browser-based workspace with no software to install. Its help article on using Novelcrafter as a web app gives installation steps for Chrome, Edge and Safari on the desktop. We did not find an official native iOS or Android app linked from Novelcrafter’s site, so on a phone you would use it in the browser. Its Codex, a structured story bible, remains the main reason writers choose it.

NovelAI’s FAQ answers “Will there be a NovelAI phone application?” by pointing to the mobile web browser and to installing the site as a Progressive Web App from browsers that support it. It does not link an App Store or Google Play app. If you search either store for these names, you will find apps with similar titles from other developers; the official sites do not link to them.

Sudowrite alternatives that work on a phone

People looking for a Sudowrite alternative on mobile usually want one of two things: a cheaper fiction tool, or a tool whose phone app does more than Sudowrite's companion app. On a phone, the realistic options split by how you reach them.

Native store apps: AIBookCraft is the fiction-specific alternative with its own iOS and Android apps, built around planning a book and drafting it chapter by chapter, with the same manuscript on the web; writing your own chapters is free and AI chapter drafting is Pro at US$5.99 a month on the web. ChatGPT and Claude also have native apps, but you keep the manuscript yourself.

Browser only: Novelcrafter and NovelAI run in a phone browser (NovelAI also as an installable web app). Squibler's official changelog, read again on October 13, 2026, describes mobile-optimized views for reading and editing in mobile browsers and a “Mobile Lite” view for reading a generated book, but no native app, and a US App Store search for “Squibler” returned no listing from Squibler itself.

Where Sudowrite is still stronger: its Story Bible, series tools and prose features are deeper than AIBookCraft's, and its companion app syncs with them. If those are why you use Sudowrite, an alternative will feel thinner at the desk even if it is more comfortable on the phone.

ChatGPT and Claude: general assistants with official apps

ChatGPT has official apps on the App Store and Google Play published by OpenAI, and Claude has official apps on both stores from Anthropic. Anthropic’s download page says conversations, projects, memory and preferences sync across signed-in devices. Either can brainstorm a premise, question an outline or draft a scene from your notes on a phone.

The trade-off is structure. A general assistant does not maintain a manuscript with chapters for you; you decide where the accepted text lives and what context to supply each time. Many writers pair an assistant with a separate manuscript home. Our comparison of ChatGPT and a dedicated book-writing app covers that division of work.

Where AIBookCraft fits

AIBookCraft is an AI-assisted book-writing product from SecondEarth AI, Inc., available on the web, iOS and Android. On the App Store it is listed as “AI Book Writer Story Maker”, and on Google Play as “AI Book Writer Story Generator”; both are AIBookCraft. The mobile apps support developing an idea, outlining, drafting chapters, creating a cover, sharing a story publicly and exporting PDF or DOCX, with feature access depending on the plan and action.

On the web, a free story-plan preview works without an account, and a free account lets you save the plan and write and edit chapters manually. Pro adds AI chapter drafting for US$5.99 a month (charged immediately, no trial) or US$59.99 a year with a 7-day free trial, as listed on the pricing page on October 9, 2026. Because books are tied to the account, you can start a plan on the phone and revise on a larger screen. Mobile in-app subscriptions and web checkout are separate purchase paths, so check the terms shown in the store or checkout you use. We do not claim offline AI drafting.

Avoid lookalike apps

AI writing is a crowded store category, and several listings reuse the names of well-known web tools. Before subscribing, open the official website of the product you mean and follow its own App Store or Google Play link, or compare the developer name on the listing with the company named on that website. If the official site only describes browser or PWA access, as NovelAI’s FAQ does, treat a store listing with that name as another developer’s product until the official site links to it.

Examples from October 13, 2026: a US App Store search for “Squibler” returned “SquibWrite: Writing Assistant” from NextPixel Apps, and a search for “Novelcrafter” returned two apps called “Novel Crafter”, one from Love Power Up, LLC and one (“Novel Crafter: AI Book Writer”) from an individual seller. None of them is made by Squibler or Novelcrafter, and neither company links to a store app from its website.

A ten-minute phone test before you pay

This is a suggested procedure, not a report that we ran it on every product. Use a disposable sample so you do not risk real work.

  1. Write or paste three paragraphs and a chapter title with your usual text size.
  2. Correct a character name in the middle of a paragraph with the keyboard open.
  3. Ask the AI for the next beat while stating one fact it must not change.
  4. Close the app, reopen it and find the exact paragraph you last accepted.
  5. Open the same project on your second device and confirm the latest sentence arrived.

Try a free story plan

Test the planning step before installing anything: turn a one-line premise into a title, logline and five editable beats in your browser.

Put it into practice
