What is the best AI story app?

There is no single best one, because the apps listed under “AI story” do different jobs. If you want to end up with a story or book that you wrote, pick a writing app such as Sudowrite or AIBookCraft. If you want to be inside a story and choose what happens, pick an interactive story app such as AI Dungeon, Talefy or AIBookCraft's Interactive Stories. If you mainly want to talk to a character, Character.AI is built for that.

Then check three things on the store listing before you download: whether the seller is the company you expect, whether the app has been updated recently, and what the free tier actually includes. The table below does that for seven apps.

Ratings, age ratings and prices are what the US App Store and Google Play pages showed on October 10, 2026. Apple and Google rate apps separately, so the same app can carry different age labels on the two stores.

AI story apps for writing your own story

Sudowrite is the best-known fiction writing tool with a phone app. Its documentation describes the iOS and Android app as a companion to the web app: some features such as Write and Rewrite are there, the app focuses on Smart Dictation and an expanded Chat, and projects sync with the web. It is the strongest choice here for serious novel drafting, and also the most expensive, starting at $24.99 a month on the US App Store.

Storri lets you build a story chapter by chapter with AI help, then generate covers, images and audio. Read its listing carefully: it shows a single version, 1.0, released in July 2023, and a 2.9 rating from 22 ratings, so check that it still works for you before paying for an account.

AIBookCraft is a book-writing app that also runs on the web, with one account across web, iPhone and Android. You can plan a premise, characters and chapters, write and edit chapters yourself on a free account, and use AI chapter drafting with Pro. On the US App Store it is listed as “AI Book Writer Story Maker” with a 4.7 rating from 350 ratings on October 10, 2026. Where AIBookCraft is weaker: it has fewer advanced drafting controls than Sudowrite, and AI drafts still need your revision.

AI story apps where you play the story

AI Dungeon is the open-ended option: you type an action, a line of dialogue or a story direction and the AI continues. Its Google Play listing says there are no ads, and free play is available; memberships add more memory and credits.

Story AI: Pick Your Path describes itself as AI interactive fiction where you are the protagonist and choose between three options at key moments, across mystery, fantasy, romance and sci-fi. On October 10, 2026 it was a small Android-only app (50+ downloads) with ads, and we found no iPhone version.

Talefy offers illustrated branching stories and roleplay with choices. Its iPhone app is rated 18+ and sells premium plans and Taleys currency packs; we did not find a Google Play listing.

AIBookCraft's Interactive Stories put you in a ready-made story world: you read the premise and rules, pick who you are, then choose what happens one scene at a time. The first scenes are free, later scenes use credits, intimate scenes fade to black by default, and an 18+ adult mode allows more sensual romance but never explicit content. Character chat apps

Character.AI is built around conversations with characters that users create, by text or voice. Messaging is unlimited on the free plan, which has ads; c.ai lite costs $4.99 and Character.AI+ is listed at $9.99 on the US App Store.

If you are under 18, open-ended chat is no longer available: Character.AI announced on October 29, 2025 that it would end open-ended chat for under-18 users by late November 2025 and keep creative features such as Stories for teens. A chat app is also a different thing from a story app: characters can be fun, but there is usually no plot that has to reach an ending.

How to spot a look-alike AI story app

Popular AI writing names attract copycat listings. NovelAI, for example, has no store app: its FAQ points phone users to the mobile browser and an installable web app, yet the App Store has apps named “NovelAI” from unrelated sellers. Before you pay, compare the listing with the company's own website.

Store titles can also hide the brand. AIBookCraft's listings do not include the word AIBookCraft, and the App Store seller is shown as Sunwoo Kim, the founder, while Google Play shows SecondEarth. Our press page lists every localized store title so you can check them.

• Seller or developer: does it match the company on the official website?
• Website link on the listing: does it go to the product's real domain?
• Version history: when was the last update, and how many versions exist?
• In-app purchases: are subscription prices listed, and do they match the official pricing page?
• Ratings: look at the number of ratings, not just the stars.

How to test an AI story app in 10 minutes

Feature lists look alike. A short test with the same premise in each app tells you more.

1. Pick one premise you would actually read, for example two rivals forced to share a cabin during a storm.
2. Writing app: ask for a three-sentence premise and a five-step plot, then edit one step yourself and see whether the next draft follows your change.
3. Story app: play eight turns and make one choice the app did not suggest, if it lets you type.
4. At the end, check three details from the start: a name, a promise and a rule of the world.
5. Close and reopen the app. Is your story still there, and can you continue on another device?
6. Find what happens when the free allowance ends: price per scene, per credit pack or per month.
