The air, already thick with the scent of damp earth and something acridly sweet, grew heavier. A low thrumming, like a giant, wounded heart, pulsed through the very ground beneath my boots. Elara’s hand, usually steady, tightened on my arm, her knuckles white. “It’s coming,” she whispered, her voice a ragged breath against the encroaching silence.

I swallowed, my throat suddenly as dry as the dust that coated everything in Z Land. The journal, tucked into my pack, felt like a lead weight. Chapter five, “Shadows of Doubt,” had been a disquieting read, filled with Elara’s own anxieties about being followed, about something ancient and hungry that dwelled in the deeper parts of this place. I hadn’t fully grasped the weight of her words until now.

The thrumming intensified, morphing into a guttural growl that vibrated in my chest cavity. Twisted, skeletal trees, their branches like grasping fingers, loomed around us, their shadows stretching and contorting in the dim, oppressive light. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, now sounded like a predator’s approach.
