The air, thick and cloying, clung to my skin like a second, unwelcome shroud. Every breath was a struggle, a shallow gasp that did little to fill the hollowness in my chest. The rustling of unseen things in the undergrowth, once a sound that sent shivers of primal fear down my spine, had become a constant, low hum beneath my awareness. I was still alive.
