A Desperate Rescue

Elara infiltrates the prison to save her mother. She uses her knowledge of the wizard's tactics and her own courage to bypass magical wards.

The air in the wizard’s fortress hung thick and still, a cloying silence that pressed in on Elara from all sides. Gone were the familiar whispers of magic, the hum of power that usually thrummed beneath her skin. Now, there was only a hollow ache, a void where her abilities used to sing. She pressed a hand to her chest, trying to coax a spark, any spark, but found nothing. It was as if the very essence of her magic had been siphoned away, leaving her feeling strangely naked, exposed.

Yet, the gnawing fear for her mother, a constant, pulsing ache, propelled her forward. She remembered the terrified glimpse she’d caught of her mother being dragged away, her eyes wide with a fear Elara had never seen before. That image was a brand, searing into her resolve. She couldn’t afford to crumble. Finn and Leo were counting on her, and more importantly, her mother was counting on her.

The fortress was a labyrinth of cold, grey stone, designed to disorient and intimidate. Shadowy alcoves seemed to writhe with unseen movement, and the faint, metallic tang of something unpleasant lingered in the air. Elara moved with a newfound stealth, her steps lighter than she’d ever imagined they could be without the buoyant lift of magic. She’d always been the one to blast through obstacles, to conjure light in the darkness. Now, she had to rely on observation, on the subtle shifts in the stone, the faint drafts that hinted at hidden passages.
