Chapter 5
Metal and Miracle
A cybernetic limb is damaged in combat. The Warden discovers his unique ability to heal both flesh and metal, a vital asset in the fight.
The air crackled with the acrid scent of ozone and burnt circuitry. Dust, thick and choking, billowed from the shattered remains of what had once been a sturdy ferrocrete wall. The Warden, his mace of wonder still humming with residual energy, surveyed the chaos. His left arm, a marvel of cybernetic engineering, hung at an unnatural angle, its polished chrome plating rent and sparking erratically. A jagged shard of debris, propelled by the force of a plasma blast, had torn through the reinforced plating, severing vital conduits and jamming the intricate actuators. Pain, a dull throb that was more of a system alert than genuine agony, registered through his augmented nervous system.
“Damn,” he muttered, the word a low growl in the debris-strewn silence. He flexed his fingers, the movement sluggish, unresponsive. The mercenaries, a group known for their ruthless efficiency and advanced weaponry, had pressed their advantage. Their assault had been relentless, a symphony of laser fire and explosive ordinance that had pushed the settlement’s meager defenses to their breaking point. He, the sole bulwark against their greed, had taken the brunt of it.
He knelt, his good hand reaching up to gingerly touch the damaged limb. The metal was hot, radiating a faint, sickly warmth. He could feel the internal bleed of diagnostic fluid, the stuttering of power flow. This was more than a mere inconvenience; it was a critical vulnerability. His cybernetics were not just tools; they were extensions of his will, integral to his combat effectiveness. To be crippled now, with the settlement still under threat, was unacceptable.
