Chapter 8
The Serpent's Kiss
A shadowy figure, drawn by the Solstice and the witches' power, begins to manipulate events. Their presence amplifies the coven's inner turmoil and sows seeds of distrust among the four.
The air itself seemed to thrum with an unseen energy, a discordant hum that vibrated beneath my skin. The crimson moon, a malevolent eye staring down from the inky expanse, cast long, skeletal shadows that danced with a life of their own across the cobblestones of Oakhaven. It was the eve of the Solstice, a night when the veil between worlds grew thin, and the ancient power within us, the four witches of this town, pulsed with a feverish intensity. Elara, Lyra, Maeve, and I – bound by blood and elemental magic, yet each a solitary island of secrets.
My own secret was a gnawing ache, a phantom limb where a piece of my soul used to be. The curse I’d fumbled into existence years ago, a careless whisper of dark intent, still echoed in the quiet hours, a constant reminder of my failure, of the one I’d lost. It was this burden, this heavy cloak of responsibility, that had led me to call them together. Elara, my steadfast mentor, her wisdom a beacon in the encroaching gloom. Lyra, her impetuous spirit a whirlwind of raw talent, eager to prove herself, yet so terribly naive. And Maeve, a fortress of stoic strength, her loyalty forged in unspoken grief, her very presence a testament to resilience.
Tonight, however, a new tremor ran through our familiar currents. A disquiet that had nothing to do with the Solstice’s natural ebb and flow. It was a subtle poison, seeping into the cracks of our coven, widening the fissures of our individual burdens. I felt it in the prickle of unease when Lyra’s gaze, usually so open, flickered with something unreadable. I sensed it in Maeve’s tightened jaw, the way her hand, ever steady, now rested a fraction too long on the hilt of her ceremonial dagger. And Elara… Elara’s eyes, usually so clear, held a flicker of something akin to fear, a reflection of the crimson moon’s unsettling glow.
