These are not mere seats; they are cosmic observation decks. The silhouettes lining the infinite balconies are not watching the Jester, nor the stage, nor even Evan and Mara. Their collective attention is fixed outwards, beyond the confines of the theater, their silent judgment encompassing the entire world. The ruined theater, Evan realizes with a chilling certainty, is not the stage itself, but merely a miniature, contained performance space for a far grander, and terrifying, spectacle. The true curtain, the one that truly matters, is only just beginning to rise.
The abrupt silence was a physical blow. One moment, the cacophony of a thousand unseen patrons had roared, a tidal wave of adulation and manufactured glee. The next, a vacuum had sucked it all away, leaving behind a ringing emptiness that pressed in on Evan’s eardrums. The applause, a tangible entity moments before, had evaporated like mist, leaving only the spectral residue of its absence. Mara’s knuckles were white where her fingers dug into his sleeve, a small, desperate anchor in the burgeoning void.
Center stage, the Jester stood, its porcelain grin a fixed, mocking rictus. But the grin faltered. A flicker, not of mirth, but of something akin to a failing bulb. A stutter. The painted smile contorted, then snapped back into place, only to waver again. Then, a whisper, thin and reedy, scraped through the silence.
