It’s like watching a broken automaton try to perform its final, futile act. Its terror of the Director is a palpable thing, a primal fear that overrides its programmed directives, a desperate plea in its glitching utterances.

Evan felt it in his bones, a chill that had nothing to do with the ruined theater’s drafty decay. Mara’s hand on his sleeve was a frantic anchor, her small tremors a counterpoint to the unnerving stillness. Center stage, the Jester remained, its porcelain grin a mask that had begun to crack.

Not with emotion, but with error.

“Act…” it whispered, the sound a digital stutter, a corrupted file played on repeat. “…Three…”
