Chapter 5
The True Treasure
Initial disappointment fades as Leo examines the wooden bird. He realizes the journey, the challenges overcome, and the sheer joy of exploration are the real treasures, far more valuable than gold.
Leo’s heart, which had been thrumming with the frantic beat of a hummingbird’s wings, began to slow. The initial surge of excitement, the breathless anticipation of glittering gold and ancient jewels, ebbed away like a tide going out, leaving behind a vast expanse of quiet disappointment. He stood there, the small, intricately carved wooden bird cradled in his palm, the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves painting shifting patterns on its smooth, polished surface. He traced the faded ink lines with a fingertip, remembering the thrill of each clue, the quickening of his pulse as he deciphered Grandpa Joe’s cryptic scribbles. He remembered the thrill of discovery when he’d first found the map, tucked away in the dusty depths of the attic. He remembered the nervous excitement as he’d ventured into the woods, his own little treasure hunter, just like he imagined Grandpa Joe had been.
