Chapter 7
The Cloak's Secret
Shulk privately meets with Snake. The topic: the Cloaks. Their ability to phase through matter and turn invisible is vital, but their origins and true potential are a mystery Shulk is determined to unravel.
The salt spray kissed Shulk’s face, a cool, invigorating slap against the lingering heat of the day. Below, the obsidian shores of the Dagger Island gleamed, worn smooth by centuries of relentless tides. The monthly gathering had concluded, a familiar dance of cautious diplomacy and veiled threats. Evva, ever the pragmatist, had traded a prototype self-heating cloak for a hefty sum of gold – Shulk had conjured it from thin air, a silent demonstration of his clan’s inherent power. Rosey, as always, had departed laden with exotic blooms and a basket overflowing with her signature honey-laced pastries, the sweet scent a stark contrast to the metallic tang of their island. And the Moonpey, their sharp-eyed leader, had offered a grudging nod of alliance, their daggers glinting with an unnerving eagerness for any sign of weakness.
But it was the quiet whispers that followed, the shadows that clung even in the bright afternoon sun, that truly occupied Shulk’s thoughts. He stood on a secluded promontory, the wind whipping his dark cloak around him. The air thrummed with a barely perceptible energy, a resonance that spoke of secrets held deep within the earth, secrets that his own clan was intrinsically linked to.
A soft rustle, barely audible above the wind’s howl, announced Snake’s arrival. He moved with a fluid grace that belied his formidable reputation, his dark eyes, sharp and assessing, met Shulk’s. Snake was more than just Shulk’s second-in-command; he was the architect of the Dagger Clan’s most enigmatic force, the trainer of the Cloaks.
