The locket, nestled warm against Lily’s chest, practically vibrated with urgency. It had led her on a merry chase through Whispering Creek, from the teetering bookshop on Elm Street to the whispering willows down by the old mill. Each clue, deciphered with a mix of Lily’s own surprising insight and Nutsy’s nonsensical chatter, had pointed them closer to something important. But this latest whisper, a faint, almost musical hum, was different. It spoke of sugar, flour, and a distinct lack of excitement.

"The 'Most Boring Bake Sale'?" Lily repeated, squinting at the faded sign that announced the annual event. It was held, as always, in the town square, a place usually reserved for the quiet contemplation of pigeons and the occasional lost dog. Today, however, it was a riot of mismatched tablecloths, wilting paper bunting, and tables groaning under the weight of baked goods that looked suspiciously like they’d been baked during a mild earthquake. "This is where the final memory is?"

Nutsy, who had been attempting to bury a particularly shiny button he’d found near the town hall, paused. He twitched his nose, his beady eyes scanning the scene with an air of profound disapproval. "Boring is an understatement, twig-snapper. I’ve seen more excitement in a slug race."
