The afternoon sun, usually a benevolent presence warming the red earth of Alikesa, seemed to cast long, hesitant shadows as Fikadu approached his father’s homestead. The air itself felt heavy, pregnant with unspoken words, a familiar sensation that had clung to Fikadu for years, a phantom limb of his own curiosity. Today, however, the weight felt different, more personal, sharpened by the brittle pages of his mother’s journals now tucked securely in his satchel.
