The Texas sun, a relentless eye in the sky, still beat down on my skin, even from miles away. It was a heat that seeped into your bones, a dry, dusty heat that felt like the very essence of my upbringing, of the stifling air I'd breathed for nineteen years. But now, the air I breathed was different. It was cooler, cleaner, tinged with the faint, sweet scent of pine and something else… something that smelled like hope.

Stacey’s hand, warm and firm, was laced with mine as we walked. Her fingers, long and slender, a stark contrast to my own calloused, often grubby ones, felt like an anchor. An anchor pulling me away from the churning, muddy waters of my past. We were in a small park, somewhere on the fringes of a town that wasn’t Texas, a town that felt blessedly neutral, a space where the ghosts of Reverend Kim's sermons and Mama’s silent disapproval couldn't quite reach.

"You okay?" Stacey asked, her voice a low murmur, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, flicking towards me. She had a way of seeing me, really seeing me, that was both terrifying and exhilarating. It was like she could peel back the layers of bravado and defiance I’d so carefully constructed, and see the raw, trembling thing beneath.
