The air in our house always tasted like dust and judgment. It clung to the floral wallpaper, settled on the worn Bible on the coffee table, and coated the back of my throat with a perpetual dryness. Papa, Reverend Thomas Kim, believed in a God who demanded obedience, a God whose love was a stern, unyielding hand. Mama, Martha, her eyes perpetually downcast, was the silent echo of his pronouncements, her quiet nods an endorsement of his harsh pronouncements. I’d seen her first at the gas station, her laughter a bell tolling a different kind of gospel. She was all sun-kissed skin and easy confidence, her eyes the color of a clear summer sky. She’d dropped her keys, a jangling cascade onto the cracked asphalt, and I, with a surge of something I couldn’t name, had scooped them up. Our fingers had brushed, a fleeting spark, and in that moment, the world tilted on its axis.
